The discussion around Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s ODI future has intensified in recent months. After retiring from Test and T20I cricket, speculation has grown about their 50-over journey. But their story in this format is far from over.
In May 2025, both announced their Test retirements during the IPL season, a decision that drew criticism for its timing. Months earlier, they had said goodbye to T20Is after guiding India to the T20 World Cup title in Barbados. While fans accepted the Test transition, the talk around ODIs has sparked strong debate.
Much of the noise comes from social media images, Kohli’s salt-and-pepper beard in London and Rohit’s relaxed holiday pictures. Critics point to their age: Kohli is 36, Rohit is 38. But the numbers tell a different story. Since 2023, Kohli has averaged above 61 in ODIs, while Rohit has scored over 1,700 runs at a strike rate of 117. Both played key roles in India’s Champions Trophy win earlier this year.
Their experience is unmatched. Kohli’s record-breaking 765-run haul in the 2023 ODI World Cup proved his big-match temperament once again. Rohit’s fearless batting style has changed the mindset of India’s white-ball cricket, inspiring teammates to attack without fear of failure.
The BCCI is in no hurry to phase them out before the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. The October 2025 Australia ODI series will be their next major challenge. Until then, they can prepare through domestic events like the Vijay Hazare Trophy and keep their form intact.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly believes selection should be purely performance-based. Rohit’s childhood coach, Dinesh Lad, feels the opener still has the hunger to play in the 2027 World Cup, especially after missing out on the 2011 triumph.
The rise of youngsters like Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant has fuelled talk of transition. But big tournaments need not only skill but also experience. With over 25 ODIs before the 2027 World Cup, the next generation can grow alongside these two modern greats.
Kohli and Rohit have earned the right to decide when to end their careers. Their grey hair may show years of cricket battles, but their performances prove they still have plenty to give. For now, India’s ODI team is stronger with them in it.
