The Maharashtra Rajya Gujarati Sahitya Academy (MRGSA) has long been celebrated for its commitment to promoting high quality literature and cultural activities in the Gujarati language. With a mission to nurture and showcase the rich heritage of Gujarati arts and culture, the Academy consistently organises events that resonate deeply with audiences.

One such remarkable event was ‘LATAanjali’, a heartfelt musical tribute to the Nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar. Organised by the MRGSA in collaboration with the Indian Musicological Society and Matunga Gujarati Seva Mandal, the event took place at the iconic Yashwant Natya Mandir in Matunga, Mumbai.
A melodious homage to Lata Didi
The evening was a soulful celebration of Lata Mangeshkar’s timeless legacy. Renowned singers, including Shraddha Shridharani, Himani Gadhvi, Komal Tendulkar, and Pramod Talavdekar, mesmerised the audience with renditions of her most memorable songs. Adding a spiritual touch to the event, Shraddha Shridharani performed Saint Tukaram’s immortal abhang, composed by Snehal Muzumdar.
The event was skilfully anchored by Sanjay Chhel, a celebrated writer, director, and lyricist, while the musical direction was expertly handled by Chetan Upadhyay. Veteran singer Manhar Udhas and acclaimed composer Lalit Pandit, of the Jatin-Lalit duo, shared personal anecdotes and cherished memories of Lata Mangeshkar, adding an emotional depth to the tribute.
A literary highlight
Another significant moment of the evening was the unveiling of ‘Tuka Kahe, Tuka Mhane’, a book featuring Saint Tukaram’s ‘abhangs’ trans-created into Gujarati. The book, published by the Academy, showcases the poetic brilliance of late Suresh Dalal, one of Gujarati literature’s most revered poets. This literary offering was a fitting addition to an event that celebrated both music and poetry.
A collaborative effort
The success of *LATAanjali* was a testament to the collaborative spirit of all involved. Snehal Muzumdar, the working president of the Academy, warmly welcomed the audience and set the tone for the evening. The event was made possible through the unwavering support of the Matunga Gujarati Seva Mandal and its trustees, including Champaklal Gangar, Bharat Vora, and Navin Shah, whose efforts ensured the show’s seamless execution.
A night to remember
‘LATAanjali’ was more than just a musical event; it was a heartfelt ode to Lata Mangeshkar’s unparalleled contribution to Indian music and culture. By blending soulful melodies, spiritual ‘abhangs’, and literary excellence, the evening left an indelible mark on everyone present.
