With Maha Kumbh 2025 approaching, airline fares for Prayagraj flights saw an unprecedented surge, causing an outcry among pilgrims and travellers. Responding to concerns over exorbitant prices, the Indian government intervened, leading airlines to announce fare reductions of up to 50%. This decision aims to make air travel more accessible for devotees attending one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.

Sharp Spike in Airfares Raises Concerns
Maha Kumbh, held every 12 years, attracts millions of devotees, sadhus, and tourists from across India and beyond. Given the enormous rush, demand for travel to Prayagraj has skyrocketed, leading to a sharp hike in flight fares. Reports indicate that tickets on key routes—such as Delhi-Prayagraj, Mumbai-Prayagraj, and Bengaluru-Prayagraj—were selling at multiple times their usual price.
Several travellers reported that economy-class tickets, usually priced between ₹4,000-₹6,000, had surged to ₹15,000-₹20,000, making air travel unaffordable for many. This sudden price rise led to criticism from passengers and raised concerns among authorities.
Government pressure leads to fare reduction

In response to public outcry, the Ministry of Civil Aviation urged airlines to regulate fares and maintain reasonable pricing. Soon after, leading airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa Air, announced price cuts ranging from 30% to 50% on Prayagraj-bound flights.
An IndiGo spokesperson confirmed that the airline has lowered fares on select routes to accommodate the increased passenger traffic. Other airlines are expected to follow suit, making it more affordable for devotees to travel.
Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that the government is actively monitoring airline pricing to prevent further price surges. “Pilgrims should not be overburdened with unfair airfare hikes. Airlines must ensure affordability and accessibility,” he said.
Maha Kumbh’s economic and logistical Impact
The Maha Kumbh is not just a spiritual event; it has significant economic and logistical implications. Local businesses, hotels, and transport services witness a major boom, while the Uttar Pradesh government invests heavily in infrastructure to support the influx of visitors.
With the first Amrit Snan or Shahi Snan (royal bath) scheduled for January 2025, millions are expected to arrive in Prayagraj. Special trains, buses, and temporary accommodations are being arranged to manage the massive crowd. The reduction in airfare is expected to ease travel burdens and boost attendance further.
The government has also issued advisories to ensure fair pricing in rail and road transport. Additionally, authorities are working on improving airport facilities to handle the expected surge in passengers.
Will the fare reduction hold?
Despite the price cuts, concerns remain about potential fare hikes as the event date approaches. Many passengers have been advised to book tickets early to secure lower rates. Experts suggest that if demand continues to rise, airlines may introduce premium pricing again, prompting further government scrutiny.
For now, the price reduction comes as a relief for lakhs of pilgrims. It will allow them to travel conveniently to one of Hinduism’s most sacred gatherings. The move also highlights the growing role of government intervention in regulating travel costs during major religious and cultural events.
