In a decisive move to boost cybercrime response, Mumbai Police has launched a three-day Cyber Investigation & Forensics Training programme for 253 officers. The training, held in collaboration with FedEx and United Way Mumbai (UWM), aims to strengthen the force’s ability to combat the rising tide of digital crime.
The training targets personnel from cyber cells, crime branches, detection units, and anti-narcotics cells, sharpening their skills in handling threats like online fraud, phishing, financial scams, and misuse of social media platforms.
Crime Fighting Goes Digital
As technology advances, so do the methods of criminals. Addressing officers during the training, Datta Nalawade, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch), said:
“Cybercrime is evolving fast. This training helps our officers stay ahead. But public awareness is just as important to ensure a safer digital space.”
Echoing this sentiment, Sanjaykumar Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police (HQ), Navi Mumbai, added:
“We value the efforts by United Way Mumbai and FedEx. Their support makes our digital defences stronger.”
FedEx & UWM: Strengthening Digital Defences
The training is part of a broader digital safety initiative by United Way Mumbai, backed by FedEx. So far, the programme has trained over 500 Navi Mumbai officers and educated more than 10,000 citizens across cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Navi Mumbai.
In Mumbai alone, 5,197 women, youth, and senior citizens have been sensitised to cyber hygiene and safe online practices.
“We’re proud to work with law enforcement and NGOs to build a digitally secure India,” said Nitin Navneet Tatiwala, Vice President at FedEx.
Public Safety Through Collaboration
George Aikara, CEO of United Way Mumbai, noted that the programme was designed with direct input from the police:
“We’ve tailored the sessions to meet evolving challenges. The police’s proactive approach and FedEx’s support made this partnership work.”
The initiative highlights the power of public-private partnerships in enhancing cybersecurity awareness, equipping officers with modern tools and insights, and ensuring citizens are digitally empowered.
The Road Ahead
With cyber threats increasing daily, training programmes like these are critical. Mumbai Police’s collaboration with FedEx and United Way Mumbai stands as a model for cross-sector cooperation, promoting both prevention and preparedness in the digital world.
