Mumbai Police have issued a preventive order ahead of Holi celebrations, outlining strict restrictions to maintain law and order. The order, effective from March 12 to March 18, aims to curb public nuisance and ensure safety during the festivities. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Akbar Pathan announced that violations will attract action under Section 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951.
As part of the guidelines, the police have prohibited obscene acts in public spaces. Singing vulgar songs, shouting offensive slogans, or making indecent gestures will not be tolerated. Additionally, the order bans the non-consensual application of colour on people. Spraying or throwing coloured water, dyes, or powder on pedestrians without their permission is strictly forbidden. Water balloons, whether plain or filled with colour, are also not allowed.
The police have warned that any breach of these regulations will result in legal consequences. While the move has been welcomed by those advocating for public order, some citizens feel it dampens the festive spirit. Authorities, however, maintain that the restrictions are necessary to prevent harassment and ensure an inclusive, safe celebration for all.
Mumbai Police have urged citizens to enjoy Holi responsibly while respecting the boundaries of others and adhering to the issued directives.
