Satellite data shows scale of disaster
A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025. The quake caused widespread damage across central Myanmar. Tremors were felt in Thailand, Bangladesh, and India.
ISRO’s Cartosat-3 satellite captured images of the devastation. The images reveal collapsed buildings, cracked roads, and ruined landmarks. Authorities are still assessing the full impact.
Major landmarks destroyed
The Ava Bridge, an iconic structure over the Irrawaddy River, collapsed. The bridge connected Sagaing with Mandalay. Its destruction has disrupted transport in the region.
Mandalay University suffered severe structural damage. Several buildings have partially collapsed. Students and staff were evacuated immediately after the quake.
The famous Ananda Pagoda in Bagan has also been affected. Parts of the structure show visible cracks. Restoration teams are evaluating the damage.
Cities worst affected
Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, saw significant destruction. Buildings have crumbled, and roads have large cracks. Thousands of people were forced to flee their homes.
Sagaing, located near the earthquake’s epicentre, also suffered heavy losses. Residential and commercial areas have been badly hit. Emergency services are struggling to reach remote areas.
Satellite images show widespread ruin
ISRO’s images confirm massive destruction in Mandalay and Sagaing. Roads are cut off, and many areas remain inaccessible. The government has requested international aid.
Rescue operations are ongoing in the worst-affected regions. Authorities fear that aftershocks may cause further damage.
Relief efforts underway
Rescue teams are working to clear debris and reach victims. Hospitals are overwhelmed with injured people. Myanmar’s military and local volunteers are providing assistance.
Countries like India and Thailand have offered aid. Relief supplies, including food and medical kits, are being sent. The situation remains critical as authorities continue their response.
