In a significant military operation, India launched Operation Sindoor on 6 May 2025, targeting nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. This action was in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack on 22 April, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including foreign tourists .
The Indian Armed Forces employed precision-guided munitions, including SCALP missiles and HAMMER bombs, delivered by Rafale jets, to strike locations associated with terrorist groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed . The operation aimed to dismantle infrastructure facilitating cross-border terrorism.
According to Indian defence sources, the strikes resulted in the elimination of over 70 militants, with an additional 60 injured . The targeted sites were reportedly used for training and launching attacks into Indian territory.
Pakistan, however, reported civilian casualties, stating that at least nine civilians, including a child, were killed, and 38 others injured . Pakistani authorities condemned the strikes as an “act of war” and claimed to have shot down several Indian aircraft, a claim not confirmed by India.
In response to the escalating tensions, Pakistan conducted retaliatory strikes, leading to the death of three Indian civilians due to artillery shelling . Both nations have since heightened military readiness along the Line of Control.
International leaders, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres and U.S. President Donald Trump, have expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict, urging both nations to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue to prevent further deterioration of regional stability .
The situation remains volatile, with both countries maintaining high alert levels. The international community continues to monitor developments closely, advocating for de-escalation and peaceful resolution.
