Sabarimala, one of Kerala’s most famous temples, is visited by millions of devotees every year. In 2019, it became the center of a controversy that shocked people across the country. The temple’s gold-plated doors, which weighed around 42.8 kilograms, were taken for restoration. What should have been a simple repair job turned into a story of mismanagement, unexpected detours, and public outrage.
The doors were entrusted to Unnikrishnan Potti, a temple sponsor, to be sent to Smart Creations, a Chennai-based company responsible for restoring the gold plating. But instead of going straight to the workshop, the doors went on a 39-day journey across South India. They first stopped at a private temple in Kottayam, then visited several temples in Andhra Pradesh, and later went to the Ayyappa shrine in Srirampuram, Bengaluru. Shockingly, the doors even reached the home of Malayalam actor Jayaram, where a private puja was held.
These unplanned detours raised serious questions about how sacred items were being handled. By the time the doors reached the workshop, their weight had dropped to around 38.25 kilograms, showing that nearly 4.5 kilograms of gold were missing. This loss, along with the unauthorized stops, angered devotees and raised doubts about the responsibility and ethics of those in charge.
When the doors finally returned to Sabarimala on September 11, 2019, they were no longer the same. The gold plating had been replaced with copper, and many intricate designs were damaged or lost. This not only affected the doors’ value but also hurt the sentiments of devotees who saw them as sacred and priceless. The High Court ordered an investigation, and several people were held accountable for failing to protect these treasured artifacts.
This story shows why sacred artifacts must be treated with the utmost care. These items are not just valuable in terms of money, they carry emotional, cultural, and spiritual meaning for millions of people.
