Test call that shook Indian cricket
Rohit Sharma has officially walked away from Test cricket. The announcement, quiet and unexpected, comes just weeks before India’s home series against England.
He played 67 Tests, scored 4,301 runs, hit 12 hundreds and led India during a bumpy transition. But in the past year, his bat stayed mostly silent. The average? Just 10.93. He didn’t even make the XI in the final Test against Australia.
White-ball dreams still alive
While his red-ball journey ends, Rohit isn’t leaving the pitch. He’ll still lead India in ODIs a format where he owns the highest individual score (264). With three double centuries to his name, Rohit remains a giant in the white-ball format.
Who takes the Test wheel?
With Rohit gone, the captaincy conundrum begins. Two frontrunners: Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah.
Gill is young, consistent, and already a deputy in ODIs and T20s. Bumrah brings pace and calm and has led India before. Kumble backs Bumrah. But fitness might be a hurdle.
Big test ahead: England series
India faces England in a five-match Test series starting 20 June in Leeds. This kicks off a new World Test Championship cycle. A fresh captain must be named soon. The stakes? Huge.
