Marathi entertainment is set to enter a new digital phase as Stage, India’s largest regional OTT platform, officially launches its Marathi offering. The move aims to address a long-standing gap in high-quality, culturally rooted Marathi content in the digital space.
Marathi cinema holds a special place in Indian film history. It is closely linked to Dadasaheb Phalke, widely regarded as the pioneer of Indian filmmaking. Over the decades, Marathi films and theatre have built a strong reputation, earning recognition on national and international platforms. Yet, in the era of streaming, many viewers have felt that Marathi content has not received the attention or quality it deserves.
The launch of Stage Marathi is an attempt to change that narrative. The official announcement took place at Veda Kunba Theatre in Andheri, bringing together key figures from the industry. Among those present were co-founder Praveen Singhal and Marathi Content Head Rajesh Pathak, along with well-known names such as Anant Mahadevan, Chinmay Mandlekar, Kshitij Date, Shreya Bugade, Urmila Jagtap, Pushkar Jog, and Nisha Parulekar.
Founded in 2019, Stage has built its identity as India’s first dialect-based OTT platform. It has already found success in languages such as Haryanvi, Rajasthani, Bhojpuri, and Gujarati. With its Marathi entry, the platform is now focusing on delivering content that reflects local culture, language, and everyday experiences.
Speaking at the event, Praveen Singhal highlighted the importance of storytelling in native languages. He pointed out that India’s linguistic diversity changes every few kilometres, and people connect more deeply with stories told in their own dialect. According to him, Stage was created with the aim of preserving cultural identity through entertainment. After gaining experience in other regions, the platform is now ready to bring Marathi stories to a wider audience.
Rajesh Pathak underlined the cultural richness of Maharashtra. The state is home to over 200 dialects, including Khandeshi, Varhadi, Konkani, Malvani, Nagpuri, Satari, Kolhapuri, and Ahirani. Each of these carries its own storytelling traditions, yet many remain underrepresented on mainstream platforms. Stage Marathi aims to bridge this gap by offering a dedicated space for such voices.
The platform will feature a mix of films and web series. Upcoming titles include Ilu Ilu 1998, Sakhe Ga Sajani, Dating Setting, Plus Minus, Premacha Tamasha, Pahila Prem, and Mazi Vali Love Story. During the launch, glimpses of Dating Setting, Ilu Ilu 1998, and Sakhe Ga Sajani were showcased. The series Dating Setting, starring Kshitij Date and Shreya Bugade, is among the key highlights.
With this expansion, Stage is positioning itself not just as a streaming service, but as a platform for cultural storytelling. By focusing on authenticity and regional depth, it aims to reshape how Marathi audiences engage with digital content.
