In a pivotal move, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has unveiled a set of transformative initiatives in the Union Budget 2025, aimed at strengthening the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). These initiatives focus on enhancing infrastructure, expanding capacity, and improving skill development, reflecting the government’s dedication to advancing technical education and preparing students for global opportunities.
Expanding Infrastructure in Emerging IITs
The budget allocates significant funding for infrastructure development in five newer IITs established after 2014. This investment will allow these institutes to accommodate an additional 6,500 students. With student enrolment in IITs doubling over the last decade, this expansion addresses the rising demand for high-quality technical education. Skill Development through National Centres of Excellence
Beyond infrastructure, the budget places a strong emphasis on skill development. A Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence for Education
In a significant push towards integrating advanced technology into education, the budget proposes the creation of a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Education, with an initial allocation of ₹500 crore. This centre will focus on using AI to enhance learning outcomes, foster innovation, and prepare students for the future workforce. This initiative highlights the government’s recognition of AI as a key driver of growth and advancement within the education sector.
