Mumbai has taken a major step toward sustainable travel with the launch of the first 12-metre electric buses under the BEST-PMI partnership. On 7 September 2025, four fully electric buses were flagged off at the BEST Office, Colaba Depot. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Ashish Sharma, IAS, General Manager of BEST, as the Chief Guest.
This launch is part of a bigger plan to add 250 electric buses to Mumbai’s roads. The new fleet will operate from the Oshiwara Depot to serve busy routes and offer more comfort to passengers.
The buses, designed by PMI Electro Mobility, are built for both convenience and sustainability. Each bus can seat 36 passengers plus the driver, has wheelchair access, and includes three foldable seats for flexibility. A low-floor design makes boarding easier for seniors and differently-abled travellers. Powered by a 366.66 kWh LFP battery, the buses can travel up to 250 km on a single charge. Their PMSM motor system ensures smooth and efficient rides across the city.
Dr. Aanchal Jain, CEO of PMI Electro Mobility, said the partnership reflects Mumbai’s commitment to cleaner public transport. She noted that delivering the buses ahead of schedule shows what can be achieved when industry and government work together. She also reaffirmed PMI’s commitment to support India’s journey towards greener mobility.
PMI Electro Mobility is already a leader in the sector, with a presence in 31 cities and more than 2,700 e-buses running across India. From Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh in the north to Kerala in the south, and from Odisha in the east to Gujarat and Goa in the west, its buses are helping cities shift to cleaner and future-ready public transport.
