In a recent affidavit submitted to the Delhi High Court, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leader Yasin Malik has made significant claims regarding his 2006 meeting with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) founder Hafiz Saeed. Malik asserts that the meeting was arranged at the behest of India’s Intelligence Bureau (IB) and that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed gratitude for his involvement.
The alleged intelligence bureau involvement
Malik’s affidavit reveals that prior to his visit to Pakistan for earthquake relief work in 2006, he was approached by then-Special Director of the IB, V.K. Joshi. According to Malik, Joshi requested him to engage with Hafiz Saeed and other militant leaders to support peace efforts between India and Pakistan. Malik complied, meeting Saeed in Pakistan and later briefing both Prime Minister Singh and National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan upon his return.
Prime minister’s alleged gratitude
Following his debriefing, Malik claims that Prime Minister Singh thanked him for his role in the backchannel peace initiative. Malik describes this acknowledgment as a sign of India’s commitment to resolving the Kashmir issue through dialogue and engagement.
Political repercussions
These revelations have stirred political controversy. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for allegedly involving Malik in sensitive diplomatic efforts, raising questions about the handling of national security matters. The affidavit has also prompted discussions about the nature of backchannel diplomacy and its implications for India’s foreign policy.
Yasin Malik’s affidavit provides a detailed account of his alleged involvement in a covert diplomatic initiative aimed at fostering peace between India and Pakistan. While the authenticity of these claims remains to be fully verified, they offer a glimpse into the complexities of international relations and the delicate balance between security concerns and diplomatic engagement.
As the Delhi High Court reviews the affidavit, it will be crucial to assess the veracity of Malik’s statements and understand their potential impact on India’s diplomatic history.
