India stands at the edge of a vast ocean of opportunity. The country’s blue economy, the economic activity derived from oceans, coasts, ports, shipping and related industries already contributes around 4 per cent of India’s gross domestic product (GDP). Roughly 95 per cent of India’s trade by volume is carried by sea, showing how central the seas are to India’s global commerce.
Now, the five-day event in Mumbai, India Maritime Week 2025, opens its doors to showcase this potential. The event is scheduled from 27 to 31 October 2025 at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Mumbai. It will bring together global industry players, policymakers, investors, innovators and coastal stakeholders under one roof to explore new possibilities in India’s maritime growth.
Why is this important? India has a coastline of over 7,500 kilometres and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of more than two million square kilometres. With these natural assets and its role in global shipping, India’s blue economy is expected to grow rapidly in several sectors such as ship-building and repair, port infrastructure, coastal tourism, sustainable fisheries, maritime renewable energy and inland waterways.
At IMW 2025, organisers are highlighting themes such as ‘Ports of the Future’, innovation in maritime technologies, digital transformation and sustainability in coastal and oceanic development. These themes matter because modern maritime growth demands more than just moving cargo. It means smarter ports, greener coastlines, cleaner ships, trained human resources and strong logistics chains.
A key part of India’s maritime ambition is linked to major national frameworks such as Maritime India Vision 2030. This vision lists over 150 initiatives across ports, shipping and waterways to strengthen the sector. At the same time, the focus on a sustainable blue economy means protecting marine ecosystems, reducing carbon footprints and creating secure livelihoods for coastal communities.
For India’s economy, the stakes are high. As port capacity expands, shipping becomes more efficient and coastal trade grows, the ripple effects will be felt in job creation, export growth, regional development and global connectivity. India Maritime Week provides a platform where ideas become agreements, technology showcases turn into real projects, and national strategy is put into action.
In simple terms, India is turning its maritime heritage into a modern growth engine. From cargo to cruise, from fishery to fintech, from ports to renewable waves the ocean is no longer just a route for trade, it is a frontier for growth. India Maritime Week 2025 is not just an event; it is a statement that India’s blue economy is ready to sail into a new era.
