As India celebrates Guru Nanak Jayanti on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will remain closed for trading. The holiday marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, and is observed across several Indian states with devotion and community service. Though trading floors on Dalal Street will stay silent, that doesn’t mean all financial movement stops. Your money still keeps working in the background through digital banking, online investments, and global markets.
According to the NSE trading holiday calendar for 2025, all segments including equity, equity derivatives, currency derivatives, interest rate derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB) will remain shut for the day. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also stay closed for the morning session but is expected to reopen for limited trading in the evening. Regular market operations will resume on Thursday, November 6, 2025.
Stock market holidays are not uncommon in India. The exchanges align their schedules with national and religious festivals throughout the year, offering a short pause for brokers and investors. These breaks also serve as a reflection of the country’s cultural and religious diversity. On Guru Nanak Jayanti, or Gurpurab, millions of Sikhs and followers across the globe commemorate the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who preached equality, compassion, and devotion to one God. Celebrations include early morning processions known as Prabhat Pheris, devotional Kirtans, and community meals called Langars, where people from all walks of life share food together.
Even with domestic markets closed, the global financial world remains active. Major international stock exchanges like the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the London Stock Exchange (LSE) will continue to operate, and any global developments during this period could impact Indian markets when they reopen. Investors with systematic investment plans (SIPs) or automated mutual fund orders may notice a brief delay, as their transactions will likely be processed on the next working day. However, banking services, UPI transfers, and online fund management will continue to function as usual, ensuring financial activity doesn’t come to a halt.
While Dalal Street takes this one-day pause, the economy itself never truly stops. Digital transactions, global investments, and online spending continue to keep the financial system in motion. For traders and investors, it’s a welcome opportunity to step back, reflect, and prepare for the next day’s opening. Because even when the stock tickers go quiet, the flow of money never really rests it simply shifts, adapts, and continues its journey through the ever-connected world of finance.
