Ahmedabad has taken a major step towards public safety and urban renewal with the demolition of a 75-year-old overhead water tank at Sarangpur Circle. The structure, which stood close to Kalupur Railway Station, was declared unsafe following a technical inspection carried out by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in August 2025. Officials found that the ageing tank no longer met safety standards and posed a potential risk to people living and travelling through the busy area.
The water tank was nearly ten storeys high and located at one of the city’s most crowded traffic junctions. Because of its location, the civic body faced a significant challenge in carrying out the demolition without causing major disruption. To address this, AMC adopted a top-down demolition method, which is considered safer and more controlled in densely populated urban zones.
In a carefully planned overnight operation, a 200-tonne crane was used to lift an 8-tonne JCB excavator onto the top of the structure. Once positioned, the machine gradually broke down the tank from the top, layer by layer. This approach helped reduce dust, noise, and the risk of debris falling onto nearby roads and buildings. It also allowed traffic movement to remain largely unaffected during peak daytime hours.
Municipal officials said the operation was designed to minimise inconvenience to the public while ensuring maximum safety for workers and residents. Temporary safety barriers were placed around the site, and emergency response teams were kept on standby throughout the process.
The demolition also sparked public discussion and political reactions. Some leaders pointed to the long life of the structure as proof of strong engineering practices from earlier decades. Others highlighted the importance of modern technology and planning in safely removing outdated infrastructure. Despite differing opinions, there was broad agreement that replacing unsafe structures is necessary for a growing city like Ahmedabad.
According to civic authorities, the demolished tank will be replaced with a new and modern water storage facility. The upcoming structure will be designed to meet present-day safety norms and support the city’s increasing water supply needs. The project is part of AMC’s wider effort to upgrade ageing public infrastructure and improve essential services.
Urban planners have welcomed the move, stating that many older civic structures across Indian cities require regular safety audits and timely replacement. As cities expand and populations grow, maintaining safe and reliable infrastructure becomes critical to avoid accidents and service disruptions.
The Sarangpur demolition marks an important example of how technology and careful planning can be used to handle complex urban challenges. With the new water tank expected to be completed in the coming months, residents can look forward to improved safety and better water distribution in the area.
This operation reflects Ahmedabad’s ongoing push towards safer, smarter, and more sustainable urban development.
