Global financial markets witnessed sharp volatility on Tuesday as escalating political tensions between the United States and Europe weighed heavily on equities, while safe-haven assets such as gold and silver surged to record levels. Investor sentiment remained cautious amid fears of renewed trade disruptions and geopolitical uncertainty.
European stock markets declined by nearly 1.5 per cent, reflecting growing nervousness among investors. US stock futures also fell by more than 1 per cent, signalling a weak opening outlook once trading resumes. Market participants attributed the sell-off to fresh concerns over potential trade conflicts following comments by US President Donald Trump regarding the imposition of new tariffs. The proposed measures target eight countries that opposed Washington’s plan to take control of Greenland, raising alarms about a possible escalation in global trade tensions.
With US markets closed for the day, trading activity across global exchanges remained subdued and highly sensitive to geopolitical developments. Analysts noted that reduced liquidity further amplified price swings, contributing to heightened market instability.
In contrast, precious metals witnessed strong buying interest as investors sought safety. Spot gold climbed nearly 2 per cent to approach the $4,700 per ounce mark, setting a new record. Silver prices also registered a notable increase, underlining a broader shift towards defensive assets. The rally in bullion reflects growing risk aversion and concerns about economic and political uncertainty in major economies.
Crude oil prices, however, moved in the opposite direction. Brent crude slipped below the $64 per barrel level as easing tensions involving Iran and uncertainty surrounding the Greenland issue weighed on energy markets. Traders adopted a cautious stance, balancing geopolitical risks with expectations of stable supply conditions.
In Indian markets, institutional investment trends highlighted contrasting strategies. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) recorded net selling of ₹3,262 crore, indicating a cautious approach amid global volatility. Meanwhile, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) stepped in with net purchases of ₹4,234 crore, providing support to domestic equities and helping limit downside pressure.
Market experts advise investors to remain vigilant in the current environment, which is marked by geopolitical risks and fluctuating asset prices. They emphasise the importance of disciplined risk management, portfolio diversification, and a long-term investment perspective to navigate ongoing uncertainty.
As global developments continue to unfold, financial markets are expected to remain sensitive to political signals and policy decisions, keeping volatility firmly in focus.
