A devastating incident marred the ongoing Surajkund International Crafts Mela on Saturday evening when a popular ‘Tsunami’ swing ride suddenly collapsed, claiming the life of a police inspector and injuring at least 13 others.
The accident occurred around 6:15 pm amid heavy crowds at the renowned cultural fair in Faridabad. Eyewitnesses reported that the swing, which swings riders high into the air for a thrilling experience, began tilting uncontrollably before a structural failure caused it to collapse. Initial reports indicate that 18 people were on board at the time, with several riders flung off or trapped as the ride gave way.
Among those critically affected was Police Inspector Jagdish Prasad, who heroically rushed to the scene to rescue trapped and injured visitors. As he attempted to aid those in distress, a part of the collapsing structure struck him in the face and head, inflicting severe injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared brought dead on arrival.
Faridabad Deputy Commissioner Ayush Sinha confirmed the details, stating: “A police inspector was declared brought dead. He had tried to save people when the joyride began tilting, but a part of the ride hit him. Around 13 people were injured and have been rushed to the hospital. Others are under treatment.”

The injured, including fair visitors and possibly some riders, were immediately shifted to local hospitals for medical care. Authorities have not yet released detailed conditions of all victims, but officials assured that treatment is ongoing.
In response, the fairgrounds were evacuated, and the area around the ride was cordoned off. An FIR is set to be registered against the joyride operator, with investigations underway to determine the cause, suspected to be mechanical failure or inadequate maintenance and safety checks.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy. “I am extremely saddened by the accident that occurred during the Surajkund Mela held in Faridabad. I express deep condolences to the family members of the person who lost their life in this accident,” he said in a statement. The CM directed officials to provide immediate and comprehensive medical assistance to the injured and extend all possible support to the victims’ families.
The Surajkund Mela, one of India’s largest and most celebrated cultural fairs, draws thousands of visitors annually with its vibrant display of handicrafts, performances, and entertainment attractions. This year’s event, however, has been overshadowed by the mishap, raising serious concerns about safety protocols for amusement rides at large public gatherings.
District officials, including the Deputy Commissioner, senior police officers, and representatives from the Tourism Department, reached the site promptly to oversee rescue operations and coordinate the response. The investigation is expected to scrutinize ride certification, operator accountability, and overall safety arrangements at the fair.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for stringent safety standards in public events. As the Surajkund Mela continues, authorities have pledged enhanced inspections to prevent future tragedies.
