India and the United Kingdom have taken a significant step towards strengthening their industrial partnership with the launch of the ‘UK-India Textile Machinery Alliance’ in Mumbai. The initiative, jointly introduced by the British Textile Machinery Association and the India ITME Society, aims to create a strong platform for technological collaboration, innovation and trade growth between the textile machinery sectors of both countries.
The alliance was officially launched at a grand industry event attended by textile manufacturers, trade experts, government officials and representatives from the British Deputy High Commission. India’s Textile Commissioner Vrinda Desai inaugurated the event and highlighted the growing importance of advanced technology in India’s rapidly expanding textile sector.
The newly formed alliance is expected to help Indian textile manufacturers gain easier access to advanced British technologies in automation, digitisation and modern textile machinery. Industry leaders believe this collaboration will improve manufacturing efficiency and help Indian companies become more competitive in global markets.
India’s textile industry is currently witnessing rapid growth and transformation. The sector is targeting a market size of 350 billion dollars by 2030. Several government initiatives, including the PM MITRA Parks scheme and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, have already accelerated investments in textile manufacturing infrastructure across the country. As a result, the demand for modern machinery and upgraded production systems is increasing steadily.
According to industry estimates, nearly 53 percent of textile mills in India are planning machinery upgrades over the next three years. Experts believe the new India-UK alliance could play a major role in fulfilling this demand by providing cost-effective and high-quality technological solutions.
The partnership is also expected to benefit from the proposed India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which may come into effect later this year. Industry experts at the event pointed out that the agreement could reduce or eliminate import duties on several textile machinery products coming from the UK. This would make advanced machinery more affordable for Indian manufacturers and strengthen bilateral trade between the two countries.
Another important aspect of the alliance is its focus on sustainability and environmentally responsible manufacturing. Both Indian and British representatives stressed the importance of adopting greener production methods in the textile industry. The collaboration aims to encourage innovation in energy-efficient machinery, waste reduction and sustainable industrial practices.
Speaking at the launch event, Textile Commissioner Vrinda Desai said that India’s textile industry is moving through a phase of major technological transformation. She stated that the alliance would connect Indian manufacturers with world-class innovation and future-ready machinery.
British trade representatives also described the partnership as more than just a trade agreement. According to them, the alliance will serve as a long-term platform for knowledge sharing, innovation and industrial development between India and the UK.
In the coming months, the alliance plans to organise webinars, technical interaction programmes, international exhibitions and business delegations. These initiatives are expected to create direct networking opportunities and open new business avenues for textile entrepreneurs from both countries.
