Microsoft has officially announced the transition of its Microsoft 365 (Office) app to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, which began rolling out on January 15, 2025. The new branding reflects the integration of Copilot within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, marking a significant shift towards AI-powered productivity tools for users across web, mobile (iOS, Android), and Windows platforms.
The transition is part of Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to innovate the workplace experience, offering users enhanced capabilities through AI integration. As of now, the app’s name and icon have been updated to reflect this shift. Additionally, the web URL has been updated to m365.cloud.microsoft, in alignment with Microsoft’s unified cloud approach.
What’s Changing with Microsoft 365 Copilot App?
The main changes include a new name — Microsoft 365 Copilot — and a redesigned icon. This update reflects Microsoft’s broader strategy of integrating Copilot Chat, which helps users with tasks like creating content, drafting documents, and generating insights within Microsoft’s suite of productivity tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more.
User Impact: What to Expect
For existing users, the transition will be seamless. On January 15, 2025, users with both work and personal accounts will see these changes reflected in their Microsoft 365 apps across various platforms. If users don’t immediately see the update, Microsoft recommends ensuring the device is connected to the internet and restarting the app.
While all users will notice the rebranding, access to Copilot features will depend on the type of account. Work account holders will receive Copilot Chat functionality at no extra cost for those with Microsoft 365 or Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses.
For personal account users, Copilot Chat will be available soon for Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers, with access limited to primary account holders. The feature will not be available to users without a Microsoft 365 subscription.
What Sets Microsoft 365 Copilot App Apart?
The Microsoft 365 Copilot app provides a comprehensive suite for productivity, allowing users to manage files, create content, and collaborate seamlessly. It integrates Copilot Chat to help users with everything from drafting documents to automating repetitive tasks, all within a single app. This app is accessible to users with work or school accounts and personal Microsoft accounts.
In comparison, the Microsoft Copilot app, available only for personal Microsoft accounts, focuses more on offering an AI assistant experience for personal tasks like learning, problem-solving, and daily management through conversational AI.
Regions Without Copilot Access
In regions where Copilot functionality is not yet available, the Microsoft 365 Copilot app will still retain its new name and icon, but the Copilot tab will be removed from the Home screen. The app will continue to serve as a productivity tool, albeit without the full Copilot features.
