In a bold move to revolutionize its aviation landscape, India has announced plans to develop 50 new airports over the next five years. This initiative seeks to strengthen regional connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and position Delhi as a major international aviation hub.
The Aviation Minister highlighted the country’s impressive aviation sector growth, noting an annual increase exceeding 10% over the past decade. Currently, India stands as the third-largest domestic aviation market globally, attracting significant international interest from potential investors.
The government’s strategy encompasses expanding airport infrastructure, increasing passenger fleet capacities, and addressing the rising demand for both domestic and international air travel. A key component of this plan is the transformation of Delhi into a critical aviation hub within the next two years, achieved through collaboration with airlines and international partners to develop comprehensive transit networks and passenger services.
Additionally, the government is focusing on sustainable aviation initiatives, aiming for a 1% blending of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in international flights by 2027, with an increase to 5% by 2030. Plans are also underway to produce 5 million tonnes of SAF to support these goals.
India’s strategic geographical position offers a unique advantage, enabling it to serve as a major international aviation hub connecting both Eastern and Western markets. The government’s proactive approach includes engaging with domestic and international stakeholders to enhance the hub-and-spoke model, thereby strengthening the nation’s aviation ecosystem.
This ambitious plan reflects India’s commitment to advancing its aviation infrastructure and capitalizing on its growing prominence in the global aviation sector.
