The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to announce India’s Test squad for the upcoming five-match series against England today, May 24, 2025. This highly anticipated announcement marks a new chapter for Indian Test cricket, as the squad enters its first series without senior pros Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
The selection meeting, led by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, is being held in Mumbai. A press conference is scheduled later in the day to officially unveil the squad. The England tour is part of the 2025–2027 ICC World Test Championship cycle and is scheduled to begin on June 20. Matches will be held at iconic venues such as Leeds, Edgbaston, Lord’s, Manchester, and The Oval.
Shubman Gill is the front-runner to captain the side. With previous leadership experience in T20Is and the IPL, Gill is seen as a steady hand to guide a transitional squad. Jasprit Bumrah, who was also considered for the role, is unlikely to lead the team as he has reportedly requested to be rested for at least two Tests due to workload concerns.
In the batting lineup, KL Rahul is expected to partner Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top. With the No. 4 slot now vacant, Gill is likely to move down to occupy the crucial position. The middle-order options include contenders like Sarfaraz Khan and Karun Nair, with a focus on young talent.
India’s bowling attack is also undergoing a shuffle. Mohammed Shami is expected to miss the tour due to injury recovery. Bumrah will spearhead the pace unit, supported by Mohammed Siraj and likely a couple of fresh faces. In the spin department, Kuldeep Yadav is expected to return to the squad alongside all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar.
The squad announcement will be broadcast live on sports channels and digital platforms later today. With the start of a fresh era and multiple positions up for grabs, fans and selectors alike are keen to see how this new-look Indian team shapes up ahead of a tough English summer.
