Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) has joined hands with The/Nudge Institute to create sustainable and dignified livelihood opportunities for 43,500 households in Jharkhand. This six year initiative, set to begin in April 2025, aims to empower women-led households, particularly those from vulnerable tribal groups, by shifting them away from traditional and often exploitative occupations.
The collaboration will be implemented through MAHE’s Manipal TATA Medical College (MTMC) and will focus on alternative livelihood solutions, including vegetable cultivation and livestock rearing. The initiative will also provide interest-free loans to help women purchase essential livelihood assets, along with 150 weeks of coaching and access to government programs and market services.
The/Nudge Institute has been actively working with the Jharkhand government to transition women engaged in the manufacturing and sale of haria, a traditional rice beer, towards more stable and socially recognised means of earning. By offering structured financial support and skill-building, the programme aims to bring long-term economic upliftment to these households.
Atul Satija, Founder and CEO of The/Nudge Institute, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating that it represents a joint commitment to uplifting the most excluded communities in Jharkhand.
Lt. Gen. M. D. Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor of MAHE, emphasised that the initiative aligns with MTMC’s long term commitment to social and financial inclusion, with a special focus on primary healthcare and skill development.
This partnership marks a crucial step in Jharkhand’s socio-economic transformation, leveraging education and structured support to enable dignified livelihoods for thousands of families.
