Mumbai’s coastal road is getting ready to go full throttle. The much-anticipated project, which partially opened earlier this year, is now expected to run 24 hours a day by mid-June.
This expansion is set to ease traffic, cut commute times, and offer a smoother ride for thousands of motorists. Currently, the road remains open only between 8 am and 8 pm. Authorities now aim to open it round-the-clock once final safety and logistics checks are completed.
The project spans 10.5 km between Marine Drive and Worli. It features twin tunnels, wide lanes, sea-facing promenades, and a focus on green aesthetics. A key aim is to reduce congestion on major south Mumbai roads like Peddar Road and NS Road.
Officials confirmed that traffic diversions and other civil works have largely been completed. The northbound tunnel toward Worli is functional, while the southbound section is expected to be ready soon. Once that’s done, both sides will open permanently for 24-hour use.
The civic body also plans a green makeover. Over 1,500 native trees will be planted along the stretch. Solar panels, LED lighting, and recycled materials are also part of the sustainable features planned. The goal is to create a scenic drive that also reduces the city’s carbon footprint.
The project has drawn attention for its scale and engineering. It includes a 2.07-km twin tunnel running under Malabar Hill, with ventilation and fire control systems. There are also multiple exit and entry points to help with traffic flow.
Authorities have said full access will begin after trials, system checks, and security clearance. The BMC has asked citizens to follow traffic norms and cooperate during the transition.
By mid-June, Mumbai’s motorists may finally enjoy a 24×7 drive along the sea. The coastal road promises to be more than just a shortcut it’s designed to be an experience.
