A new pilot project, the National Geospatial Knowledge-based Land Survey of Urban Habitations (NAKSHA), is set to revolutionise land record management across 152 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in India. The initiative, launched by the Ministry of Rural Development, aims to improve urban planning and reduce land disputes by creating accurate and reliable land records.
Union Minister of Rural Development and Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare will inaugurate the NAKSHA project in Raisen, Madhya Pradesh, where the initiative will be implemented across 26 states and 3 Union Territories. The project will include drone flights, the unveiling of a Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) booklet, and the screening of videos to highlight the importance of the programme.
NAKSHA’s goal is to update land ownership records in urban areas and create a transparent, IT-based property record administration system. By doing so, the programme aims to enhance citizens’ ease of living, support urban development, and foster sustainable practices. The Survey of India will provide technical support for the aerial surveys, while the Madhya Pradesh State Electronic Development Corporation will develop the web-GIS platform for storing and accessing these records.
The project will be funded by the Government of India at an estimated cost of ₹194 crore, marking a significant investment in the country’s urban infrastructure.
