A national workshop on Capacity Building in Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS): Documentation, Validation, and Communication took place at DDGD Vaishnav College, Chennai. The event was jointly organised by CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR) and DDGD Vaishnav College. It aimed to help faculty, scientists, and science communicators understand IKS documentation and validation.

Experts Discuss India’s Intellectual Traditions

The workshop opened with a keynote speech by theoretical physicist M D Srinivas. He spoke on India’s intellectual traditions and the relevance of IKS in modern science. He stressed the need for collaboration to merge ancient wisdom with contemporary advancements.

The first session, chaired by M S Sriram, focused on India’s science and technology heritage. Speakers discussed agriculture, traditional medicine, and efforts to document and preserve IKS. Researcher K Vijayalakshmi highlighted sustainable farming through indigenous rice varieties. V Aarthi spoke on integrating Siddha medicine with modern healthcare. Charu Lata explained the SVASTIK initiative’s role in spreading traditional knowledge.

Hands-On Training for Science Communication

The second session featured interactive training led by Paramananda Barman and Team SVASTIK. Participants learned science communication techniques, including infographic design and short video creation. The workshop ended with a feedback session where attendees shared their insights.

An exhibition showcased SVASTIK publications and stories, giving participants a closer look at research efforts. Organisers emphasised the need to promote and document India’s scientific heritage for future generations.
