The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) India recently conducted a specialised training session for 30 police officers from the Academy for Prison and Correctional Administration (APCA) in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. Held in New Delhi on 13th February 2025, the training focused on enhancing the officers’ understanding of human rights and legal frameworks in prison administration.

During the session, NHRC Secretary General Bharat Lal encouraged officers to view their roles as a form of ‘dharma,’ emphasising that their duties go beyond jobs—they are responsible for ensuring the protection of human rights for every individual in their custody. He highlighted the importance of upholding justice, dignity, and a rehabilitative environment in prisons.

The officers engaged in interactive sessions with senior NHRC officials, including Ms. Vijay Lakshmi Vihan, who discussed the Protection of Human Rights (PHR) Act, 1993, and the workings of the NHRC’s Law Division. Additionally, Deputy Superintendent of Police Dushyant Singh addressed human rights concerns in prison administration, while Senior System Analyst Sanjeev Sharma provided training on the NHRC’s online complaints management system, demonstrating tools for uploading reports and submitting action updates.

This training session reinforced NHRC’s commitment to ensuring that human rights and dignity are upheld within correctional institutions across the country, empowering officers to foster a more humane approach to prison management.
