Mumbai (Anil Bedag): When a film is based on a real military operation, dramatic action alone is not enough. The details have to feel believable too. That is the approach being taken by the team of Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s upcoming film Operation Ganga, which is drawing attention for its subject, scale and strong ensemble cast.
Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Vishnu Mohan, the film is set against the backdrop of India’s evacuation and rescue mission during the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022. The operation involved bringing Indian citizens back from Ukraine amid an extremely challenging situation, giving the film a real-world foundation.
To add authenticity to its military sequences, Squadron Leader Varlin Panwar has joined the production as a Military Advisor. Her role will focus on helping the filmmaking team present military procedures, combat manoeuvres and action sequences in a more realistic manner.
Her involvement is particularly significant for a film where military action forms an important part of the storytelling. From the movement of personnel to combat situations and rescue operations, even small details can influence how audiences experience a sequence on screen.
Rather than relying only on cinematic interpretation, the makers are bringing military expertise into the filmmaking process. This could help the action portions of Operation Ganga maintain a stronger connection with real-world military practices.
A Story Rooted in a Real Crisis
The film takes inspiration from one of the most significant evacuation missions undertaken by India during the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The backdrop provides the makers with an opportunity to explore not only the scale of a rescue operation but also the human side of bringing people to safety during a crisis.
Mohanlal leads the cast, with Arjun Rampal, Bhagyashri Borse, Adil Hussain and Parthiban appearing in pivotal roles. The combination of experienced actors and a story inspired by real events has added to interest around the project.
Produced by Gokulam Gopalan under the banner of Sree Gokulam Movies, the film is also backed by an accomplished technical team.
Big Names Behind the Camera
The technical crew includes cinematographer Miroslaw Kuba Brozek, known for his work on Pushpa, along with production designer Rajeevan and action director C. Young Oh.
The film’s music is being composed by Shashwat Sachdev, while Shameer Mohammed is handling the editing. Sound designer Bishwadeep Chatterjee is also part of the project.
With its real-life backdrop, large-scale action and military expertise, Operation Ganga is aiming to create an experience that goes beyond conventional war-film spectacle.
The addition of Squadron Leader Varlin Panwar suggests that the makers are paying attention to the finer details that can make military scenes feel convincing. For audiences, that could make the film’s rescue missions and combat sequences more immersive while keeping the emotional weight of the story at the centre.
As production progresses, Operation Ganga is shaping up as a film that combines real-world events, military authenticity and mainstream cinematic scale, with Mohanlal at the heart of the story.
