The Railway Budget for 2025 has been unveiled with a total allocation of Rs 2.55 lakh crore, a slight reduction from the previous year’s Rs 2.62 lakh crore. Despite the cut, the budget emphasises passenger capacity enhancement, safety upgrades, and infrastructure development.
A key focus is the expansion of the Vande Bharat train network, with plans to manufacture and deploy 1,000 Vande Bharat trains by 2030. These trains, known for their modern amenities and energy efficiency, aim to transform rail travel in India.

To address overcrowding on popular routes, Indian Railways will manufacture 17,500 non-AC coaches. This move is expected to boost passenger capacity while keeping fares affordable for the general public.
Safety remains a top priority, with significant investments in the Kavach system, an indigenous technology designed to prevent train collisions. The budget also includes funds for upgrading signalling systems and track maintenance to enhance operational safety.
Infrastructure development features prominently, with allocations for new railway lines, station upgrades, and electrification projects. The expansion of the dedicated freight corridor is also a key focus, aimed at improving logistics and reducing carbon emissions.
While the reduced budget allocation has raised concerns, railway officials remain optimistic that the planned initiatives will modernise the network, improve passenger experience, and ensure sustainable growth in the sector.
