India’s tribal communities, constituting 8.6% of the population, have long been custodians of rich cultural heritage. To uplift these communities, the Government of India has increased the budget for Scheduled Tribes’ development by 45.79% from 2024-25 to 2025-26.

Empowering Through Van Dhan Yojana

Launched on 14 April 2018, the Van Dhan Yojana transforms tribal gatherers into entrepreneurs. Under TRIFED’s guidance, over 11.83 lakh tribal individuals have benefited, with ₹587 crores allocated to the scheme. The initiative establishes Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKCs), where Self-Help Groups (SHGs) engage in the collection, value addition, and marketing of Minor Forest Produce (MFP). Each cluster, comprising 15 SHGs with about 300 beneficiaries, receives ₹15 lakhs in funding, fostering sustainable income for forest-dwelling communities.

TRIBES INDIA: Showcasing Tribal Crafts

To bridge tribal products with global markets, TRIFED launched TRIBES INDIA in 1999. Starting with a single retail outlet in New Delhi, it has expanded to 117 outlets nationwide. TRIFED sources handicrafts, handlooms, and natural food products from over 200 tribal communities, ensuring fair pricing and wider exposure. The products are also available globally via www.tribesindia.com.

Strategic Collaborations

TRIFED’s partnerships enhance tribal entrepreneurship:

  • National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT): Collaborates on product curation and design development.
  • Himachal Pradesh Horticulture Produce Marketing and Processing Corporation Ltd (HPMC): Focuses on technology and processing of horticultural produce.

These collaborations aim to integrate tribal artisans into mainstream markets, promoting sustainable development.
