In a significant move to support farmers, the Yogi government has announced a ₹30 per quintal increase in sugarcane prices for the 2025–26 crushing season. Early sugarcane varieties will now fetch ₹400 per quintal, while normal varieties are priced at ₹390 per quintal, translating to an additional benefit of approximately ₹3,000 crore for farmers, said Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary, Minister for Sugarcane Development and Sugar Industry.
This marks the fourth sugarcane price hike during Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s tenure, aimed at strengthening farmers’ incomes and energizing the rural economy.
“Sugarcane farmers are the backbone of Uttar Pradesh’s economy. It is our firm commitment to ensure fair and timely payment for their produce,” Chaudhary said. He further highlighted that the Yogi government has so far disbursed ₹2,90,225 crore to sugarcane farmers, significantly higher than ₹1,47,346 crore paid during the SP and BSP regimes from 2007 to 2017.
Uttar Pradesh currently operates 122 sugar mills, ranking second in the country. Chaudhary noted that the government has attracted ₹12,000 crore in new investments, revived closed mills, expanded crushing capacity, and set up CBG plants for alternative energy production.
Under the “Smart Sugarcane Farmer” initiative, cultivation processes such as acreage registration and slip issuance are fully digitized, ensuring direct payment to farmers’ bank accounts and eliminating middlemen.
The state has also achieved remarkable growth in ethanol production, rising from 410 million liters to 1,820 million liters, and sugarcane acreage has expanded to 2.951 million hectares, reinforcing Uttar Pradesh’s position as the top sugarcane-producing state in India.
