In a significant move to enhance public amenities, authorities have initiated the demolition of outdated toilets and the construction of modern facilities at Mumbai’s prominent maidans, including Oval and Cross Maidan. This initiative aims to address the longstanding lack of amenities for women at these public grounds.
The newly planned facilities will feature coffee and ATM machines, separate toilets for men and women—including both Indian and Western-style options—accommodations for physically handicapped individuals, bathing and changing areas, sanitary napkin dispensers, locker rooms, and waiting areas. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has confirmed that construction has already commenced at Oval Maidan, Azad Maidan, and Cross Maidan.
This development follows a directive from the authorities last year, prompted by concerns over inadequate facilities for women at these playgrounds. Under the guidance of local officials, the decision was made to replace the old toilets with new constructions.
In October 2024, the scope of this initiative was expanded by directing the formation of a Special Inquiry Team (SIT) to address the urgent need for facilities for working women across the city. The state’s Urban Development Department established the SIT in January, which has since been collecting data on existing facilities and formulating plans for new constructions.
Authorities emphasized that providing appropriate facilities for women is fundamental to their dignity and development, especially in the realm of sports. This move is seen as a significant step towards creating an environment that respects and nurtures female athletes’ talents
