Digital gold has become very popular in India because it is easy to buy through apps and online platforms. With just a few clicks, investors can buy small amounts of gold and store it digitally. Many platforms promise instant purchase, easy storage, and the ability to sell quickly. However, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has recently warned investors that digital gold may not always be backed by real, physical gold stored in secure vaults.
Unlike traditional gold investments such as coins, jewellery, or gold ETFs, which are fully backed by physical gold, digital gold does not always offer the same guarantees. While some apps claim their digital gold is stored in vaults, investors often cannot verify whether the gold actually exists. This creates a risk that you may not truly own the gold you think you do.
There are several risks associated with digital gold. First, lack of verification means you cannot always confirm that the gold is real. Second, platform risk exists because if the company or app fails, it may be difficult to access your gold. Third, the price of digital gold may include hidden fees, making it more expensive than buying physical gold. Finally, regulatory protections are limited because digital gold is not as strictly regulated as gold ETFs or Sovereign Gold Bonds.
SEBI recommends investors be cautious when investing in digital gold. Safer alternatives include gold ETFs, which are traded on stock exchanges and backed by physical gold, and Sovereign Gold Bonds issued by the Government of India, which offer guaranteed backing and interest. Buying physical gold from certified jewellers or banks is also a secure option.
Digital gold may seem attractive because of convenience and low minimum investment amounts. However, SEBI’s warning reminds investors to be careful and do their homework before investing. It is important to check the credibility of the platform, ensure the gold is backed by a trusted vault, and understand all the costs involved.
In conclusion, digital gold is not inherently bad, but investors need to be aware of the risks. Doing proper research and choosing regulated, verified options is essential. Always make sure you know exactly what you are buying, because sometimes the digital gold you see may not be the real gold you expect.
