Mumbai commuters will soon get a safer and more convenient walking route between Metro Line 3 and the Worli waterfront as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved a Rs 702.4 crore underground pedestrian link project.
The 1.3-kilometre underground passage will connect the Nehru Science Centre Metro station on Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) with the Worli Promenade and the upcoming landscaped garden. The passage will pass beneath the Mahalaxmi Racecourse area and Lala Lajpatrai Road.
The new pedestrian link aims to improve last-mile connectivity for metro passengers by providing a direct route without the need to walk through busy roads or cross heavy traffic zones.
The underground walkway will include modern facilities such as escalators, lifts, CCTV cameras, lighting, ventilation systems, fire safety arrangements and multiple entry and exit points. It will also be designed to ensure accessibility for all commuters.
The project will be executed by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), while the entire cost will be funded by the BMC. The proposal was approved during the BMC Standing Committee meeting, allowing the project to move forward.
According to officials, the payment will be released in phases instead of a single payment. The first 25 per cent will be linked to the MoU advance, followed by payments based on design approvals, contracts and construction progress.
BMC Standing Committee Chairman Prabhakar Shinde said that the Coastal Road and the upcoming Worli landscaped garden are expected to attract more visitors, making better public transport connectivity essential.
The underground pedestrian link is expected to make travel between Metro Line 3 and Worli Promenade smoother, especially during Mumbai’s heavy monsoon and summer months. The project is also aimed at creating a safer pedestrian-friendly environment in one of the city’s important waterfront areas.
