Yash Raj Films’ action entertainer Alpha continues to perform well at the global box office, collecting more than ₹92.75 crore worldwide. While audiences have praised the film’s action sequences and performances, one aspect that has generated significant attention is the realistic de-ageing of actor Bobby Deol.
The visual transformation, created by YRF’s in-house visual effects division, yFX Studios, recreates Bobby Deol’s younger appearance from films such as Soldier, Gupt and Barsaat. Rather than being used as a visual spectacle, the effect was designed to support a crucial part of the film’s story by showing the character at an earlier stage of his life.
Director Shiv Rawail said the de-ageing sequence was always intended to strengthen the narrative rather than simply showcase technology. According to him, audiences needed to believe they were seeing the character during a defining moment from his past, making the visual effect essential to the emotional impact of the story.
He added that the team’s goal was to make the technology virtually invisible so viewers remained focused on the character and the performance instead of noticing the visual effects.
For Bobby Deol, the experience marked a first in his acting career. Reflecting on seeing a younger version of himself on screen, the actor described the experience as surreal and said it demonstrated how rapidly filmmaking technology continues to evolve.
However, Bobby emphasised that technology alone cannot create a convincing performance. He noted that actors still need to deliver genuine emotions, while visual effects simply help bring the creative vision to life.
The transformation was developed by yFX Studios, which combined artificial intelligence with traditional visual effects techniques to recreate Bobby Deol’s youthful appearance across an extended sequence.
Sherry Bharda, Head of yFX Studios and VFX Supervisor, said today’s audiences expect visual effects to look completely natural, making subtlety more important than spectacle. He explained that the team adopted a hybrid workflow where AI tools were guided by experienced VFX artists to maintain complete creative control over every frame.
According to Bharda, one of the biggest challenges was the limited availability of high-quality archival footage of Bobby Deol from the late 1990s in matching camera angles and lighting conditions. This meant the team had less reference material for AI training than expected.
He also pointed out that realistic de-ageing involves much more than smoothing wrinkles. Small details such as skin texture, facial expressions and eye movement all change with age. Maintaining these natural characteristics was essential to preserving Bobby Deol’s original performance and avoiding the artificial appearance often associated with AI-generated faces.
The makers believe the sequence represents an important technological milestone for yFX Studios, demonstrating how artificial intelligence and visual effects can work together in service of storytelling rather than becoming the centre of attention.
Produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Shiv Rawail, Alpha stars Alia Bhatt, Sharvari, Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor in key roles. The film is currently running in cinemas worldwide.
