The National School of Drama (NSD), India’s premier theatre training institution and a globally renowned centre for performing arts, has inaugurated its new Mumbai branch, marking a historic expansion in its 66-year journey of nurturing theatre talent.
The grand launch was attended by a distinguished gathering of theatre veterans, celebrated alumni, academicians, and students, all coming together to celebrate NSD’s world-class pedagogy entering the heart of Mumbai. The new campus is designed to embody NSD’s philosophy of immersive, collaborative, and practice-oriented learning, blending theoretical knowledge with hands-on stage experience.
Eminent personalities present at the inauguration included Chittaranjan Tripathy, Waman Kendre, Ram Gopal Bajaj, Paresh Rawal, Raghubir Yadav, Zakir Hussain, Mukesh Chhabra, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Manoj Joshi, Vivek Aggarwal, Amita Prasad Sarbhai, Bharat Gupt, Mita Vashisht, Ashok Banthia, Atul Tiwari, Swanand Kirkire, Nivedita Bhargava, Ashok Mishra, and Sameer Upadhyay.
Established in 1959 under the Sangeet Natak Akademi and later becoming an autonomous institution in 1975, NSD continues to be fully funded by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The Mumbai branch aims to extend NSD’s legacy of rigorous, professional theatre training to India’s cultural and creative hub.
Speaking at the event, Director Chittaranjan Tripathy emphasised that the Mumbai centre will maintain NSD’s tradition of intensive training, guided by a comprehensive curriculum covering all aspects of theatre. Students will gain practical experience through stage productions, performed publicly as part of their learning. Tripathy remarked, “The launch of NSD Mumbai represents not just the growth of our institution, but an expansion of opportunities for young artists who dream in the language of theatre. Mumbai’s vibrant creative energy makes it the ideal location for this new chapter.”
The new centre underscores NSD’s commitment to strengthening India’s performing arts ecosystem and making professional theatre education more accessible to emerging talent across the country.
