Indian-origin fashion designer Anjali Phougat, who is based in the United States, believes that Bollywood has become a powerful force in shaping global fashion trends. Having spent years observing style on international runways as well as celebrity red carpets, she says two actresses stand out for their distinctive approach to fashion: Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor. According to Phougat, both have developed unique style identities that go beyond clothing and reflect confidence, creativity and personal expression.
Speaking about her favourite Bollywood style icons, Phougat described Deepika Padukone as the perfect example of timeless elegance. She said Deepika has the rare ability to make every outfit appear effortless, whether she is walking the red carpet in couture or travelling in a simple airport look.
According to Phougat, Deepika’s style is defined by structured silhouettes, understated sophistication and quiet confidence. She believes the actress does not merely wear designer outfits but brings them to life through her personality and presence. This natural ease, she said, allows Deepika to carry even the most elaborate couture without letting the clothes overshadow her.
While praising Deepika’s classic approach, Phougat said Sonam Kapoor represents a completely different yet equally compelling side of fashion. She described Sonam as someone who treats clothing as an artistic medium rather than simply a style statement.
Phougat noted that Sonam has never been afraid to experiment with bold silhouettes, dramatic designs or unconventional combinations. Whether blending traditional Indian craftsmanship with international trends or embracing avant garde fashion, Sonam consistently pushes creative boundaries. According to the designer, this fearless attitude has helped place Indian couture on the global fashion map in a fresh and editorial manner.
Despite their contrasting styles, Phougat believes both actresses share one important quality. She said every fashion choice they make appears intentional rather than accidental. Their outfits often tell a story and reflect their personalities, making their style memorable and authentic.
Offering her personal styling suggestions, Phougat said she would like to see Deepika embrace even more structured couture combined with softer, spiritual influences. She recommended flowing drapes paired with architectural tailoring and modern interpretations of handwoven Indian textiles. Muted jewel tones and monochrome colour palettes, she added, would further enhance Deepika’s natural elegance without overwhelming her presence.
For Sonam Kapoor, Phougat encouraged continued experimentation while adding greater emotional depth through heritage craftsmanship. She suggested incorporating traditional Indian techniques such as Banarasi weaving, intricate zardozi embroidery and temple jewellery into futuristic, contemporary designs. According to her, blending these heritage elements with modern silhouettes could elevate Sonam’s already distinctive editorial style into something even more iconic and timeless.
Phougat concluded that Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor represent two equally influential faces of Indian fashion. While one embodies refined elegance and understated luxury, the other celebrates fearless creativity and artistic expression. Together, she believes they have helped redefine modern Indian style and strengthened its presence on the global fashion stage, inspiring designers and fashion enthusiasts around the world.
