The Election Commission (EC) has addressed concerns over duplicate Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers appearing in different states. Social media and news reports recently flagged instances where voters in separate states shared identical EPIC numbers, raising fears of duplicate or fake voter entries.

The EC clarified that while some voters have identical EPIC numbers, their demographic details, assembly constituency, and polling booth remain distinct. Every voter can only cast their vote at their designated polling station in their registered state or union territory, making duplicate voting impossible.
The issue stems from a decentralised and manual system used before electoral roll data was consolidated under the ERONET platform. Previously, different states and union territories independently generated EPIC numbers, sometimes using the same alphanumeric series, leading to unintentional duplication.
To eliminate any confusion and prevent future issues, the EC has decided to assign unique EPIC numbers to all registered voters. Cases of duplicate EPIC numbers will be rectified through a streamlined process, and the ERONET 2.0 platform will assist in this task.
This move ensures greater transparency in the electoral system and reinforces the integrity of India’s voter database. Voters are urged to check their details and report discrepancies if any.
