Speaking to Deshwale, a regular online shopper shared her frustration. “Every festive season, I look forward to online shopping for deals. But this year, I noticed extra charges, platform fees, and handling costs added to my order at checkout. It completely offset the discounts I was expecting. It feels unfair,” she said.

The government has taken note of these concerns. Flipkart and Amazon are under investigation by the Department of Consumer Affairs for allegedly imposing hidden fees. Union Minister Prahlad Joshi criticised the practice, saying it is misleading and unfair to consumers. For everyday shoppers, government action signals that their concerns are being heard.
Transparency is key. Platforms should make all fees visible before checkout, so consumers know exactly what they are paying. Festive discounts lose their meaning if hidden charges sneak in at the end. Technology exists to make pricing clear. It’s time platforms use it responsibly.
Consumers also need to stay alert. Checking the final price, reading the platform’s policies, and comparing total costs can save frustration. As a consumer told Deshwale, “Even during festive cheer, staying aware of hidden charges is really important.” Her words reflect the thoughts of countless shoppers across India.
The issue also highlights fairness in e-commerce. While big platforms can offer flashy discounts, hidden fees often impact ordinary consumers and small sellers. Clear pricing protects everyone buyers, sellers, and platforms alike.
The government’s probe could bring lasting change. Stricter rules on fee disclosure may become standard, ensuring that festive sales remain a genuinely rewarding experience. Platforms that embrace fairness will build trust and loyalty, while those that rely on hidden charges may lose credibility.
