A devastating road accident in Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district claimed 20 lives and left 20–27 people injured early Monday morning. The head-on collision occurred on the Mirjaguda–Khanapur stretch of the Hyderabad–Bijapur Highway in Chevella mandal, when a gravel/concrete-laden tipper truck rammed into a Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) bus.
How the crash happened
Police said the TSRTC bus had departed from Tandur depot and was en route to Hyderabad via Chevella, carrying around 40–70 passengers (many standing). The truck, coming from the opposite direction, was transporting a heavy load of gravel and concrete mix.
The impact was catastrophic. The truck’s load spilled onto the bus, crushing the front six rows and trapping passengers under debris. The bus was completely mangled, with twisted metal and shattered glass scattered across the road.
Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene of screams for help from the wreckage and a loud crash audible from over a kilometer away. Local residents rushed to the site with tractors and tools, pulling out survivors before emergency teams arrived.
Rescue operations and emergency response
Police, firefighters, and ambulances reached the scene within minutes. Rescue teams used JCBs and excavators to clear the debris, a process that took over two hours. The injured were rushed to Chevella Government Hospital and major facilities in Hyderabad (Gandhi and Osmania Hospitals). Several remain in critical condition.
Traffic was diverted for several hours as the highway was covered in wreckage and gravel. Emotional scenes unfolded as family members and locals gathered, many searching for missing loved ones.
Government and official reaction
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed profound grief and visited the accident site. He directed the Chief Secretary (K. Ramakrishna Rao) and DGP (Shivadhar Reddy) to oversee rescue and relief efforts and ensure free medical treatment for the injured.
The state government announced:
- ₹5 lakh compensation per deceased family
- ₹2 lakh ex-gratia from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF)
A detailed investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause and fix responsibility.
Possible Causes and Investigation
Preliminary reports indicate the tipper truck was overspeeding and driving on the wrong side, possibly while overtaking a two-wheeler, leading to loss of control. Authorities are also examining:
- Overloading
- Mechanical failure
- Road condition and visibility
Both the truck and bus drivers were among the deceased. The vehicles have been seized for forensic analysis. Investigators will assess highway design, signage, and lighting at the accident spot.
Why the casualties were So high
- Head-on collision at high speed
- Front of the bus bore the full impact
- Gravel/concrete load buried passengers, delaying rescue
- Low visibility due to early morning fog
- Overcrowded bus (standing passengers)
- Rural location limited immediate help despite quick response
Victims suffered multiple fractures, severe head and chest injuries, and crush trauma.
Voices from the ground
Residents near Mirjaguda said the crash sounded like an explosion. Many arrived with tractors and crowbars, working alongside rescuers to free trapped passengers.
At hospitals, heart-wrenching scenes continued as relatives arrived in distress. Doctors confirmed multiple trauma cases, with some patients requiring emergency surgery.
Recurring road tragedies
This tragedy is not an isolated incident. India records over 1.5 lakh road deaths annually (per NCRB), with a significant number involving heavy vehicles and passenger buses.
The Hyderabad–Bijapur Highway is a high-risk corridor due to:
- Heavy movement of sand and gravel trucks
- Poor lane discipline
- Frequent overloading and speeding
Locals allege repeated accidents in the area, with little improvement in road safety despite prior incidents.
The Telangana government has ordered a comprehensive safety audit of state highways. Officials will:
- Identify accident-prone zones
- Install warning signs, speed cameras, and lane dividers
- Enforce stricter checks on commercial vehicles
For the families who lost loved ones, however, these measures come too late. An ordinary Monday morning journey turned into an unforgettable tragedy.
The Mirjaguda crash is a painful reminder of the fragility of life on India’s highways and the urgent need for systemic change before more lives are lost.
