In a remarkable example of lifelong learning and professional perseverance, Ahmedabad-based spice trader Dr. Hiren Gandhi has earned a PhD from American Management University at the age of 56. His achievement has drawn international attention, with the Government of Vietnam inviting him to contribute to efforts aimed at strengthening global supply chain networks.
Dr. Gandhi completed his doctoral studies after six years of research focused on global supply chain management, international trade and business resilience. His academic journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period marked by widespread disruptions to businesses and global trade.
While many industries faced uncertainty during the pandemic, Dr. Gandhi chose to pursue higher education alongside managing his business operations. According to information shared by his associates, he maintained a rigorous schedule that balanced entrepreneurship, physical fitness and academic research.
He managed his spice and international trade business during the day and devoted several hours each night to doctoral studies, often aligning his schedule with academic programmes based in the United States. This routine reportedly continued for six consecutive years.
His research focused on understanding the vulnerabilities exposed by the pandemic and identifying ways to strengthen international supply chains against future disruptions. The study examined strategies that could improve resilience in global trade systems and ensure continuity during crises.
The journey, however, was not without challenges. During the early phase of his doctoral programme, Dr. Gandhi faced academic setbacks and did not achieve the results he had expected. Rather than discontinuing his studies, he continued his research efforts and improved his academic performance in subsequent stages. His progress later earned him a scholarship from the university.
Dr. Gandhi’s work eventually attracted international recognition. His expertise in supply chain management and global trade led to an invitation from the Government of Vietnam, which sought his insights on strengthening international supply chain frameworks.
The development is being viewed as a significant achievement for both Gujarat’s business community and India’s growing contribution to global trade and research.
Speaking about his journey, Dr. Gandhi credited the support of his family, particularly his wife Krishnaben Gandhi, for helping him balance the demands of business, education and personal commitments over the years.
His achievement has also drawn attention as an example of lifelong learning at a time when professionals are increasingly returning to education to upgrade their skills and knowledge. Business leaders and education experts have often highlighted the importance of continuous learning in an evolving global economy.
Dr. Gandhi’s story demonstrates how determination, discipline and effective time management can help individuals pursue academic and professional goals simultaneously. From managing a business during one of the most challenging periods in recent history to earning a doctoral degree and receiving international recognition, his journey reflects the growing importance of knowledge and adaptability in today’s interconnected world.
