18 Stars, One Cruise, Two Climaxes
Housefull 5 is not just another sequel. It’s India’s most expensive comedy, with a budget touching ₹350 crore. Backed by producer Sajid Nadiadwala, the film features a gigantic star cast led by Akshay Kumar and includes 18 more actors from across generations. Abhishek Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Nana Patekar, Dino Morea, Jacqueline Fernandez, Kriti Sanon, Johnny Lever, Chitrangada Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Soundarya Sharma, and many others join in this comic chaos.
Whodunit on Water
Set on a luxury cruise, the story kicks off with the mysterious death of a billionaire. Akshay Kumar’s character jumps into detective mode, surrounded by a mix of comic passengers and twisty motives. The film blends slapstick humour with suspense.
But here’s the catch: two versions of the film titled Housefull 5A and Housefull 5B – will be released simultaneously. Each will feature a different climax and a different killer. The idea, a 30-year-old concept by Nadiadwala, makes this one of India’s boldest mainstream experiments.
Shot at Sea, Literally
The film was shot on a real cruise over 40 days, sailing through Newcastle, Spain, Normandy, Honfleur, and back to Plymouth. Director Tarun Mansukhani replaces Sajid Khan, who directed earlier parts but was dropped after MeToo allegations.
The soundtrack is a mix of styles, featuring Yo Yo Honey Singh, White Noise Collectives, Tanishk Bagchi, and Kratex. Julius Packiam handles the background score.
Digital Disruption Before Release
On May 9, the teaser was abruptly removed from YouTube due to a copyright claim by Mofusion Studios over the track “Laal Pari.” A legal note and a signed statement from Yo Yo Honey Singh confirmed Nadiadwala’s rights to the song. The teaser was soon restored.
Advance Bookings Offer Hope
Initially set for Diwali 2024, the film was postponed. Now it’s releasing on 6 June 2025.
Despite limited promotions, the film has pulled strong advance bookings:
- ₹90.88 lakh gross from 24,626 tickets
- 7,598 shows booked
- Clock bookings: ₹2.97 crore
- Total advance collection: ₹3.88 crore
That’s impressive for a comedy, but it’s just the beginning.
₹350 Crore Risk
The real question: Can Housefull 5 recover its massive cost?
The budget covers everything—cruise shoots, cast fees, international locations, VFX, dual-ending edits, and music rights. It’s not just another funny film. It’s a blockbuster-level investment.
Yet, comedies rarely make such high returns. Even successful ones don’t usually cross ₹300 crore at the box office.
Box Office vs Bold Move
Audiences will decide if this gamble pays off. The dual-ending format may draw attention. But will it pull in enough repeat viewers?
For now, all eyes are on June 6. If the film connects with fans, it might sail. If not, it risks becoming Bollywood’s costliest misfire.
