At least seven people lost their lives and around a dozen others were injured on Tuesday morning when a passenger bus veered off the road and plunged into a deep gorge in the Bhikiyasain area of Almora district. The tragic incident has triggered urgent rescue operations and prompted authorities to investigate the cause of the crash.
The bus, carrying approximately 18 to 19 passengers, was travelling from Dwarahat to Ramnagar in neighbouring Nainital district when the driver reportedly lost control near a sharp bend around six kilometres from Bhikiyasain. Senior Superintendent of Police Devendra Pincha confirmed that the vehicle fell into a steep ravine on the morning of 30 December.
Emergency teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police, reached the site soon after the accident was reported. Rescue personnel worked to bring the injured up from the gorge and transport them to nearby medical centres for urgent treatment.
Six victims died at the crash site, while a seventh passenger succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital. Several of the injured, including the bus driver, were admitted to local health facilities. Those in critical condition were referred to larger hospitals for advanced medical care.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep grief over the loss of life and offered condolences to the families of the victims. He stated that he is monitoring the situation closely, remains in contact with district authorities, and has instructed officials to provide all necessary assistance and medical support to the injured.
Investigators have yet to determine the exact cause of the accident. Authorities are examining whether the vehicle’s condition, driver error, or hazardous road conditions at the bend contributed to the crash.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety in mountainous regions of Uttarakhand, where narrow routes, sharp turns, and winter visibility issues often create dangerous travel conditions.
Rescue operations and administrative coordination are ongoing as officials continue relief measures and work to establish how the tragedy occurred.
