Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) recently hosted the National Conference on Emerging Trends in Applied Physics (ETAP-2026), bringing together leading scientists, academicians, and industry experts from across India. The three-day conference was organised by the Manipal Institute of Applied Physics (MIAP) from March 16 to 18, 2026, at Manipal, marking the institute’s first anniversary.

The inaugural session was presided over by MAHE Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen. (Dr.) M D Venkatesh, who highlighted the growing importance of applied physics in solving real-world challenges and driving innovation. The event’s Chief Guest, Prof. Indranil Manna, Vice Chancellor of the Birla Institute of Technology Mesra, delivered a keynote address on laser additive manufacturing. He stressed the need for stronger collaboration between science, engineering, and industry to accelerate technological advancement.

ETAP-2026 featured an impressive lineup of distinguished speakers from premier institutions. Plenary lectures were delivered by experts such as Prof. Umesh Waghmare, Prof. A. C. Bhasikuttan, Prof. Chandrabhas Narayana, Prof. Amit Agrawal, Prof. Vijayamohanan K. Pillai, and Dr Nirmal K. Viswanathan. The conference also included insightful invited talks by specialists like Dr Saptarshi Basu, Dr Rabibrata Mukherjee, Dr Sangeeta Kale, Dr Renu John, Dr Kanchana V., Dr Bhoje Gowd, and Dr Soumyadip Sett.

The sessions covered a wide spectrum of emerging fields in applied physics. Key areas of discussion included quantum materials, nanoscience, photonics, spectroscopy, biomedical diagnostics, energy materials, and thermal management. Industry-focused sessions further highlighted how scientific research is being translated into practical applications, strengthening the link between academia and industry.

The conference witnessed participation from over 250 delegates and featured more than 90 poster presentations. These sessions provided a valuable platform for students and young researchers to showcase their work, exchange ideas, and engage with leading experts in the field.

Dr Sajan D. George, Director of MIAP, expressed satisfaction over the successful organisation of the event. He noted that ETAP-2026 reflects the institute’s commitment to promoting interdisciplinary research and advancing the practical applications of science.

The valedictory session was addressed by Pro Vice Chancellor (Technology & Science) Dr Narayana Sabhahit, who appreciated the organisers for hosting a high-impact academic event. The conference concluded with the distribution of Best Poster Awards, recognising outstanding contributions from participants and encouraging continued innovation in applied physics.
