The upcoming Marathi film Abeer has unveiled its new poster on the auspicious occasion of Vijayadashami, offering a glimpse into its exploration of women’s self-respect, inner strength and identity. Scheduled to release in theatres on December 18, the film challenges conventional perceptions of beauty and highlights the prejudices women face because of their physical appearance.
Produced by Shri Sudesh Vasantrao Zaware Patil and presented by Shambho Entertainment and Shri Mahakal Productions, Abeer is written and directed by Akash Vishnu Shinde. The film examines a social mindset that often judges women by their perceived physical shortcomings rather than recognising their artistic talents, achievements and capabilities. Through its narrative, the film aims to encourage women to challenge discrimination and stand up for themselves with confidence.
The newly released poster features a silhouette of a woman against deep orange and brown hues, with an interplay of light and shadow. At its centre is the thought-provoking question, “Should beauty be sought in the face or in one’s values?” The visual reflects the film’s central theme, encouraging audiences to look beyond outward appearances and recognise the importance of personality, values and inner strength.
Speaking about the poster, director Akash Vishnu Shinde said that a woman’s dreams, inner beauty and emotional world often remain overlooked amid society’s emphasis on physical appearance. Through Abeer, the team hopes to sensitively portray women’s struggles, emotions and self-respect. Drawing a connection with Vijayadashami, which celebrates the victory of good over evil, he expressed hope that the film would encourage audiences to move beyond restrictive notions of beauty and embrace humanity.
Producer Sudesh Vasantrao Zaware Patil said the film seeks to challenge perceptions that confine beauty to complexion and instead highlight women’s determination, achievements and dignity. He also explained the cultural significance of the title Abeer, referring to the coloured powder used during religious celebrations. The title draws a connection with Maharashtra’s Warkari tradition and devotion to Lord Vitthal, whose dusky complexion holds significance in devotional culture. According to the producer, the film aims to create an emotional connection with audiences across rural and urban Maharashtra, particularly those deeply connected to the state’s devotional traditions.
The film has also gained recognition through festival selections. After being selected for the 22nd Indian Film Festival Stuttgart in Germany, Abeer was selected for the Jagran Film Festival in Delhi, providing opportunities to present its socially relevant subject to wider audiences.
The cast includes Payal Jadhav, Nikhil Chavan, Devika Daftardar, Avinash Narkar, Ganesh Deshmukh, Prajakta Hanamghar, Gargi Phule, Yash Dimble and Roshan Sunil Raut, alongside several other actors. Sujit Zaware Patil, former vice-president of the Ahilyanagar Zilla Parishad, appears in a special role.
Nishant Bhagwat is the cinematographer, while Nilesh Gawand has handled editing. Rohit Nagbhide has composed the music and background score, with Arya Ambekar, Vaishali Made and Radha Khude lending their voices to the songs. With its focus on dignity, identity and social perceptions, Abeer is set to arrive in cinemas on December 18.
