Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa made a historic visit to India on 14 October 2025, marking his first trip to the country since assuming office. The four-day visit reflects the growing significance of Mongolia in India’s foreign policy and underlines the long-standing diplomatic and cultural bonds between the two nations.
During his stay, President Ukhnaa held wide-ranging talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House, New Delhi. The discussions highlighted multiple areas of bilateral cooperation, including defence and security, energy, mining, information technology, education, healthcare, and cultural collaboration. Both leaders emphasized that the relationship between India and Mongolia extends beyond formal diplomacy, rooted in centuries of shared Buddhist heritage, earning them the designation of ‘spiritual siblings.’
Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment as a steadfast and reliable partner in Mongolia’s development journey. Notably, he highlighted the $1.7 billion oil refinery project being funded under India’s Line of Credit, which aims to bolster Mongolia’s energy security. This landmark project demonstrates India’s role as a trusted partner in Mongolia’s economic growth and strategic infrastructure development.
As part of the visit, Modi announced that India would extend free e-visas to Mongolian citizens, further facilitating people-to-people contacts and deepening cultural and educational exchanges. Both leaders engaged in ceremonial activities, including a tree planting ceremony, reflecting warmth and camaraderie that has characterised bilateral interactions over the years.
The visit also underscores the expanding scope of India-Mongolia relations since diplomatic ties were established in 1955. Over the decades, both nations have collaborated in multiple sectors, with a particular focus on cultural, technological, and educational initiatives. The current visit seeks to strengthen these collaborations while exploring new avenues for trade and investment.
President Ukhnaa’s visit represents more than ceremonial diplomacy; it signals Mongolia’s increasing importance in India’s foreign policy calculus, particularly in the context of regional stability and development. Observers note that this milestone visit could pave the way for deeper strategic engagement and enhanced cooperation across sectors, strengthening the foundation for a mutually beneficial partnership.
As India and Mongolia continue to expand their ties, this historic presidential visit marks a significant milestone in bilateral relations, reinforcing the spiritual, cultural, and strategic dimensions of a partnership that both nations seek to nurture in the years ahead.
