Indian Railways is set to strengthen rail connectivity between Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu with the launch of the Narasapur Chennai Vande Bharat train, which will begin commercial operations from December 15. The semi-high-speed service is expected to significantly reduce travel time while offering faster and more comfortable journeys for passengers travelling between the two cities.
According to the Southern Railway zone, the service is an extension of the existing Dr MGR Chennai Central–Vijayawada Vande Bharat Express. While trains from Narasapur to Chennai will start running from December 15, services in the opposite direction, from Chennai to Narasapur, will commence two days later, on December 17.
Extension of existing Vande Bharat service
Well, the thing is, this is not an entirely new train introduction. Instead, Indian Railways has extended train numbers 20677 and 20678, which currently operate between Chennai Central and Vijayawada.
In an official statement, Southern Railway said that Train No. 20677, running from Dr MGR Chennai Central, will be extended up to Narasapur with effect from December 17. Meanwhile, Train No. 20678, operating in the return direction, will begin running from Narasapur from December 15. Both services will run six days a week, excluding Tuesdays.
This extension is aimed at improving direct rail access for passengers from the coastal Andhra region to Chennai without the need for multiple connections.
Travel time and distance
The Narasapur Chennai Vande Bharat train will cover a distance of 655 kilometres in approximately 8 hours and 55 minutes. That marks a notable improvement over conventional express services operating on the same route.
Look, for regular travellers, this reduction in travel time could make a real difference, especially for business commuters and those travelling for education or medical needs.
Route and stoppages
During its journey between Dr MGR Chennai Central and Narasapur, the Vande Bharat Express will stop at seven key stations. These include:
- Renigunta Junction
- Nellore
- Ongole
- Tenali Junction
- Vijayawada Junction
- Gudivada Junction
- Bhimavaram Town
These stops ensure connectivity to major urban centres while still maintaining the train’s semi-high-speed character.
Timings of the Vande Bharat Express
As per the announced timetable, Train No. 20677 Dr MGR Chennai Central–Narasapur Vande Bharat Express will depart Chennai at 5:30 am and arrive at Narasapur at 2:10 pm.
In the return direction, Train No. 20678 Narasapur–Dr MGR Chennai Central Vande Bharat Express will leave Narasapur at 2:50 pm and reach Chennai at 11:45 pm.
Honestly, these timings are designed to make same-day return travel more practical, particularly for passengers heading to Chennai for work or appointments.
Ticket prices
The fare structure for the Narasapur Chennai Vande Bharat train has also been announced. Passengers travelling in the AC Chair Car will have to pay Rs 1,635. For those opting for the Executive Chair Car, the ticket price has been fixed at Rs 3,030.
These fares are in line with other Vande Bharat services operating over similar distances across the country.
Boost to regional connectivity
Believe it or not, Narasapur has long lacked a direct premium train service to Chennai, despite steady passenger demand. The extension of the Vande Bharat Express is expected to improve mobility for students, professionals and families travelling between Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Indian Railways has been steadily expanding the Vande Bharat network as part of its broader push to modernise passenger rail services. Faster acceleration, improved onboard facilities and reduced journey times have made these trains popular across several routes.
As the Narasapur Chennai Vande Bharat train prepares to roll out, the real test will be how effectively it meets passenger demand while maintaining punctuality and service quality.
