In the early hours of December 25, 2025, a tragic accident on National Highway 48 in Karnataka turned an ordinary bus journey into a night of fear and flames. A private sleeper bus travelling from Bengaluru towards Shivamogga and Gokarna collided with a truck near Gorlathu Cross in Hiriyur taluk, Chitradurga district. The accident happened around 2:30 to 3:00 am, when most passengers were asleep.
The collision was strong enough to cause the bus to catch fire almost immediately. Many passengers woke up to the impact, smoke, and heat spreading inside the vehicle. The truck is believed to have crossed the divider and hit the bus from the front, damaging the fuel tank area and causing the fire to spread quickly. Within minutes, the vehicle was burning on the highway.
At least ten people lost their lives in the accident, and several others suffered injuries and burns. Some passengers escaped by breaking windows, while others were pulled out by locals and early responders. Survivors described the scene as chaotic, with shouts, broken glass, and thick smoke filling the air. The bus driver and conductor survived, but the truck driver and assistant are believed to be among those who did not.
Rescue teams and fire officers reached the spot and worked to control the flames, but the blaze had already caused heavy damage. The bus was reduced to a burnt shell on the road. The accident caused long traffic delays on NH-48 as emergency workers cleared the area and helped the injured reach nearby hospitals in Hiriyur, Chitradurga, and Shira.
Government officials reacted soon after the incident. Relief assistance and ex-gratia compensation were announced for the victims and their families. The state government also ordered an investigation to understand the reason for the crash and to check if speeding, driver error, or vehicle safety issues were involved.
This accident has once again raised serious questions about highway safety in India. NH-48 is one of the busiest routes in the region, especially at night, and the crash has led to fresh calls for stricter monitoring, safer road design, and better emergency systems. The tragic incident stands as a reminder that one moment on the highway can change many lives forever.
