Odisha’s growth story is no longer limited to factories, mines and industrial corridors. As investment, infrastructure and employment expand, the State is also preparing for a larger urban population and greater demand for homes, offices, retail spaces and modern communities.

Against this backdrop, Odisha-based industrial group Oriom Group has entered the real estate sector with the launch of Oriom Realty. The new vertical will initially focus on Bhubaneswar and other emerging growth corridors across the State.

The move marks a new chapter for a group that has spent the past two decades building businesses in sectors including steel and power, speciality chemicals and refractories. Founded in Jharsuguda and headquartered in Bhubaneswar, Oriom Group currently has more than 3,000 employees and operates industrial facilities across eastern India.

Its move into property development reflects a broader connection between industrial expansion and urban growth. When new factories, infrastructure projects and businesses come to a region, they also create demand for housing, commercial spaces, hospitality and other urban services.

In other words, the growth of an industrial economy can eventually change the shape of the cities around it.

Oriom Group has already had some experience in this area. In the early 2000s, the company facilitated the development of four multi-storey residential projects in Jharsuguda, responding to the city’s growing demand for modern housing.

Oriom Realty now plans to expand that experience into a larger real estate business. Its proposed portfolio will include residential, retail, commercial, hospitality and mixed-use developments.

Bhubaneswar is expected to be an important starting point. The city has emerged as a major centre for education, technology, services and investment in eastern India, while improving connectivity and infrastructure are supporting its expansion.

The company is also linking its plans to Odisha’s longer-term development ambitions. The State’s Vision 2036 and Vision 2047 frameworks focus on urbanisation, infrastructure, industrial competitiveness and regional economic development.

One number highlights the scale of the potential change. According to figures cited by the company, Odisha’s urbanisation level is currently around 17%, with the State targeting 40% by 2036 and 60% by 2047.

If those targets are approached over the coming decades, the demand created by urban growth could extend well beyond housing. Cities will need commercial centres, retail spaces, hotels, transport links, public infrastructure and communities designed around changing lifestyles.

That makes real estate an important part of the next stage of Odisha’s economic transformation, rather than simply another construction opportunity.

Oriom Realty says it plans to use the group’s existing engineering capabilities, project execution experience and governance practices while developing its property portfolio. The company has also highlighted sustainable design, modern technology and customer-focused processes as part of its approach.

For Oriom Group, the expansion represents a shift from building industrial assets to participating in the development of the urban spaces surrounding them.

Whether the strategy succeeds will depend on how effectively the company executes its projects and responds to the changing needs of Odisha’s cities. But its entry into real estate reflects a larger trend: as industrial and infrastructure investment changes Odisha’s economic landscape, the State’s cities are likely to change with it.
