Every year, millions of Indians set out in search of better opportunities abroad. From skilled professionals to daily wage workers, the promise of higher wages and improved living standards drives this migration. Yet, life overseas can be challenging. Migrant workers often face exploitation, unsafe working conditions, and legal hurdles in unfamiliar countries. Recognising these risks, the Indian government has strengthened measures to protect its citizens and ensure their journeys are safer and more dignified.
One of the cornerstones of these efforts is the Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana (PBBY), an insurance scheme providing financial security to workers abroad. In the unfortunate event of death or accidents, the scheme offers life insurance and repatriation support, easing the burden on families back home. Alongside this, the Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Suraksha Yojana (MGPSY) offers a voluntary social security net, including pension and life insurance benefits, helping migrants plan for the future and protect their loved ones.
Technology is also playing a crucial role. The government’s eMigrate portal simplifies the emigration process, ensuring transparency in recruitment and providing a platform for grievance redressal. By regulating recruitment agencies and monitoring migration flows, the portal reduces the chances of workers falling prey to unscrupulous operators.
International cooperation further strengthens protections. Bilateral agreements with countries such as Israel and Gulf nations guarantee that Indian workers receive proper lodging, medical insurance, and social security. These legal frameworks help prevent exploitation and ensure that workers are treated fairly while overseas.
Education and preparedness are equally important. Pre-departure orientation training and skill development programs equip workers with the knowledge and abilities needed to adapt to foreign work environments. From understanding labour laws to basic language skills, these programs give migrants the confidence to navigate life abroad safely.
Support systems on the ground are another vital aspect. The Overseas Workers Resource Centre (OWRC) and Indian consulates provide guidance, emergency assistance, and legal help to workers facing difficulties. Awareness campaigns also inform potential migrants about their rights and the schemes available to safeguard them.
These initiatives reflect a broader commitment: migration should be a path to opportunity, not risk. By combining insurance, legal safeguards, technology, training, and diplomatic support, India is building a framework that protects its citizens and ensures their work abroad is safe, fair, and dignified.
For the millions of Indians working overseas, these measures offer more than just policy they offer peace of mind, hope, and the reassurance that their rights and wellbeing matter.
